I am posting for a colleague, an RN charged with starting a bf program at a
local hospital.  She is finding that the pediatricians at her hosp are
denying bf for most routine postpartum meds, and the moms are needing to pump
and dump, and the babies alternately fed.  She realizes, of course, that the
babies belong to the moms and the moms can challenge the ped, but this is not
often done.  She would like to have a policy in place for bf and
administering meds that allows bf in most instances and wants to know what
others do/have done to implement such a policy.  She is fortunate to have a
pro-bf ped chairwoman who will try to persuade all the peds to adopt whatever
policy she comes up with.  The AAP recommendations don't have all the meds in
question addressed.
