Hello again,
Happy August. I just searched the archives to see what's new with tattoos and
breastfeeding and didn't find anything more current than last summer. I noted
a few posts recommended if the mom is concerned she can always wait. The mom
who called me last night didn't seem concerned at all, just interested to know
what info was out there and good. She has a 1 month old baby, has many
previous tatttoos which were never infected, is healthy, and wants another tattoo.
She went to her regular artist, and was told that another woman who had wanted
a tattoo was told that she shouldn't get one by her baby's pediatrician
because " her body might go into shock and her milk will dry up." I told her there
might be legitimate reasons why someone wouldn't get tattooed while nursing but
that one didn't seem very evidence-based...:) So here I am, having looked in
the Breastfeeding Answer Book, LLL website, other breastfeeding books, etc.
and didn't find anything there. Did find this: 'Tattoos are created with a
tool that allows a needle to inject colored dye into the superficial layer of
skin. As this is an invasive procedure, there is risk of infection to both the
skin and underlying tissue. Should the underlying tissue become infected, it
could alter the amount of milk produced as well as the milk's clarity. "Assuming
the tattoo does not become infected it should not affect breastfeeding," Dr.
Brandt says. It is recommended that women do not get breast tattoos done during
the period in which they are breastfeeding. ' from Ask Jeeves.... If milk
supply and nursing are going along well after 4-6 weeks, and the mom is well
educated and careful about her artist...?
 Any other thoughts?
By the way, I wish I had gotten a tattoo years ago, now that I donate blood
many times a year and the hospital depends on it, can't do it...
Thanks in advance for any input,
Judy LeVan Fram, LLLL, IBCLC, Brooklyn, NY, USA
