Hey, slow down folks!

Kirsten was simply doing the members of the list a service while also
helping her employer. She did not ask for a debate regarding RN
IBCLCs. The fact is, an employer can require whatever qualifications
they want for a position. Since we don't know the non lactation
requirements of the job, let's not jump to conclusions. It may very
well be that this particular position needs both an RN an IBCLC or as
qualified an LC as they can find. With medical costs the way they are,
it only makes sense to try to fill both areas with one person rather
than two. (not optimal, but realistic)

Now of course not all IBCLCs need to be RNs, but think about those lucky
patients whose pedi's are also IBCLC! There are certainly times and
situations where having both qualifications is a definite advantage,
I've experienced several myself. For example, for babies who are on
home photo therapy, I can do both the LC exam and deal with those issues
as well as draw the blood sample for the daily bilirubin test, saving
the family and insurance company the expense of two home visits by
medical personnel. (one example of many)

Don't get me wrong, the vast majority of time, I agree, an RN is not
necessary to provide mom and baby with the best of care for their
lactation needs. But please keep an open mind to the fact that it is
not *always* so.
