Yes, this is most certainly part of the problem and it exposes a serious flaw in LLLI's policy on donor milk. LLLIs policy prohibits LLLLs from mentioning milk sharing to mothers. It is very well accepted that it is unethical for health workers (and internationally volunteer breastfeeding counsellors are considered to be health workers) to withhold relevant information from individuals. LLLIs policy breaches the ethical principles of veracity and autonomy- most unfortunate really. It places leaders in an invidious position. It means that when presented with a situation in which donor milk could be an option they can either follow LLLI's policy and act unethically or they can act ethically and present the mother with information and breach LLLI's policy. No one wins here!
