There is a world of difference between low carb and high protein/saturated fat. There is implication in the studies that they are one-in-the-same. Further, there is a world of difference between complex and simple carbs and they tend to be lumped together when discussing "low carb". I think such discussions really miss the point. The human diet should be nutrient-desne. Diets high in protein and fat are nutrient-poor as are high-carb diets. I am equally concerned about both and believe that keeping a contant production of insulin is no more health-supporting that is ketosis. While Atkins-type diets are a fad that we have good cause to be concerned about, the simle high-carb, high-trans-fat SAD (Standard American Diet) is no better solution. I suggest to my clients that they read the book "Eat To Live"--I have found no better, science-based (but simple to read) resource for excellent nutrition--pregnant, lactating or not.
