I remember reading a few years ago accounts of men lactating after being
released from POW camps in Burma. Apparently when the men who were severely
emaciated were given good nutrition some of their hormones kicked in
earlier than others and they started lactating. After reading that I always
wondered if it were possible for healthy men to actually produce milk.
Gives new meaning to the phrase "as useless as tits on a bull..." ;-)
On the subject of adoptive breastfeeding there are a couple of newsgroups
on adoptive breastfeeding that may be helpful and the WHO breastfeeding in
an emergency explains relacation very clearly. Also, there are numerous
articles that you can find via medline on adoptive breastfeeding and
relactation. A very interesting letter from a doctor who had worked in PNG
can be found in BMJ 311: 188-189 in which a drug protocol is suggested
including ethinyloestradiol, medroxyprogesterone, metoclopromide,
chlorpromazine and methyldopa. I would be interested to hear the opinions
of others on this protocol.
