Subject: [LACTNET] milk donation

Hi all,
I have a mother who would like to donate her surplus of EBM. She has a
problem with donating her milk to a bank that is going to turn around and
sell
it. She was going to donate it to a bank for HIV positive moms in Africa
,but
then found out that only 25% of her milk would go to africa and 75% will go
to
make fortified breastmilk to be sold to NICU's nationwide. Does anyone have
in
suggestions I can pass along to this mom?
Thanks

**Hello Brandi,

I have a question: do you know if this milkbank has to do with Prolacta
Bioscience...? Last Friday, we had a donor milk symposium in Nijmegen,
mid-southern Netherlands. Question was: how to gather donor milk and for
which population should it be used? Especially VLBW-babies are at risk for
NEC and seem to be doing a lot better on donor milk than on PTF.
Bovine-based formula's may trigger allergies and put more pressure on the
immature infant gut. Personally, I would feel that could be a good
destination for my milk as well. ;-)
About the commercial aspect... Prolacta told us that they are deeply in
debt, as a result of all the research and everything. I just read the
article on this website:
http://www.breastfeedingsymbol.org/2007/07/10/more-thoughts-on-prolacta-bioscien\ce/
Is it true, that all milk banks sell the same product with the same research
and safety measures? Of course, you can donate to your next door neighbour,
but I don't think that is a safe, evidence-based method to treat very early
premies. How do other milk banks take care of their financial resources?
Where does their money come from, if not from profits of selling their
products?
I don't know about blood: in the Netherlands it is not allowed to be paid
for donating blood (which, imo, is a very good thing). Nevertheless, I don't
think hospitals get their blood for nothing, so
probably somewhere there is money involved, too, especially for highly
sensitive blood products. But I'm not sure, how all of this is dealt with...
