Laura said "I am not alone in my concerns about Dr. Karp's methods and the way they are implemented by some parents." I think the latter part of that statement (my emphasis) hits the nail on the head. Let's not throw out a "method" based on how some misuse it. The objections I hear from some posters regarding Harvy Karp and his book/tape seem to be more how some people take what he has said and throw it all out of proportion and take too much out of context. I have never heard/read him saying that this should be used for all babies all the time or that it is the only approach to crying. He emphasizes that it is not to be used instead of feeding or to prolong the interval between feedings. Nor does he claim it for his own (except perhaps for the term "calming reflex"). Parents today do seek help from sources such as books and classes and I for one am glad to see one that encourages parents to "read" their babies and try to understand their needs rather than force them to conform to someone's artificial standard of how babies "should" act.

Winnie
