I'm off sick with a cold today and since I am getting paid sick leave
I thought I should do something work-related. So I started reading the
book I ordered in advance when I heard it was to be published in July,
and have not been disappointed.
I have no financial interest in the book or in book sales. I have,
however, met several of the authors and I know them all from this
list. I happen to know they collaborated closely with a researcher
also on this list. As far as I can see it hasn't been mentioned here
before.
In light of recent threads on sleep arrangements and risks I think
it's worth mentioning for those who may not have seen the book
reviewed elsewhere. I'm only about 40 pages into it but I am ready to
endorse it: for anyone working with breastfeeding families, to have in
a lending library and to read yourself.
Given that mothers do manage to read dreadful books about sleep
training and baby-controlling strategies when they are sleep-deprived,
it's nice that there is a new book to counter the piles of
scaremongering literature on the topic.
But probably the best way to support a new mother in the throes of
sleepless nights and anxiety about how to get more rest without
putting baby at risk, is for the people helping her to read the book
and give her what she needs until she is rested enough to immerse
herself in the text on her own.
Title: 'Sweet Sleep - Nighttime and naptime strategies for the
breastfeeding family' by Diane Wiessinger, Diana West, Linda J. Smith
and Teresa Pitman, with over 20 pages of references to the literature
in very fine print. ISBN 978--0-345-51847-7
