This gets to the heart of a discussion I've had in two places this week:
about older mothers. A women in a forum this week, commented that she had
been told by her Ped, that at 39 years old, she was too old to produce
enough milk - even though she'd successfully fed three other children prior
to this birth. In discussion with her about my 43 year old virgin breasts
making more than enough milk... and lots of other older mothers chimed in
also... I metioned that famed 80+ years wet nurse who could still produce a
pint a day.
Does anyone have a cite, or a site, with this British wet-nurse info on it?
Having mentioned it myself a few times, I'd like a reference for it. Hence
why I'm mentioning it openly, rather than in email. A site would be cool -
although a cite will do! (As I work online, sites and links are far more
use than cites to print material.)
Also, this led to a discussion about post-menopausal woman who use chemical
therapies to maintain a gestation... can they carry on to lactate? One
person has such a pregnancy in her family at the moment - to a 56 years old
mother, due in a couple of months. We thought it over, and my instinct was
that as lactation was supply and demand, and she will have carried to birth
- then nursing should be feasible.
But no one could find any references to support this - or to state that
lactation would not be possible? We were working on the basis of the
chemical assisted pregnancy being the first - as if the breasts had
previously suckled, we presumed lactation should be feasible.
Anyone have any references on this? Any idea where I could find such
esoteric and 'new' info? As this is quite a new process, I'm presuming
there isn't much out there?
This is a personal request, in order for me to expand my knowledge base, so
if you are more comfortable responding in email, plese do so. I always
wonder how many others then use the sites and references given to any
question however! Most people who lurk, absorb eagerly, but never ask... if
we always respond openly, everyone gets to share! :-)
