If you read the AAP recommendation, you will find that it states very  
clearly that breastmilk/breastfeeding is best, but human milk was never meant to  
supply all the Vit D an infant needs - sunlight was.  Now that we are all  
staying out of the sun for skin cancer reasons, additional Vit D is needed for  
some infants.  For public health reasons (ie one recommendation for all),  the 
recommendation was expanded to all infants.  We have had clinical Vit D  
deficiency in sunny San Diego!  Carol Wagner's research shows clearly that  a mother 
must take huge amounts of Vit D (4-6000 Units/day or more) to have  enough get 
into the milk.  Vit D in large amounts can be dangerous.
