Judy, I did not see the origional post on this but:
Baby's CNS (Central nervous System) is still developing at birth. Some are
*further behind* than others.
The movements you describe ..>>"rocking or bouncing baby, using a fast,
small motion while holding baby firmly against the chest or shoulder" will
increase organization before feeding?<< help with the labrinthine reflex in
the inner ear. This is the sense that tells you where you are in space in
relation to what's around you.
But I disagree with the *fast motions* to organize because they usually
trigger the startle reflex and disorganize the baby. Sometimes just changing
diapers before feeding sets these kids off. I describe it to moms as feeling
like you're falling (ever had one of those dreams?) Bringing the baby into
flexion, arms across the chest, feet free (If you swaddle the feet you
trigger another reflex and the baby arches away from the breast.) and
swaddling before feedings does a better job at oragizing the CNS for feeding.
If the baby is frantic or crying I have the mom let the baby suck her finger
until he calms down before trying latch. It seems to me that the fast motions
would work better to wake the sleepy baby.
However, I do recommend rhythmic movements and sounds between feedings to
help with general organization.
