I think a baby DOES suck on the Haberman; it may not be the suck that is
responsible for moving the milk (the positive pressure does that) but they
exert suction on many objects that do not move milk such as pacifiers and
fingers. Haberman feeding would not "suck deprive" a baby.

I have found a brief period suck deprivation gently imposed on a baby who
appears capable of a proper suckle on the breast but isn't doing so despite
skilled assistance is effective sometimes. This might be a baby who is
"stuck" on bottle or finger feeding. Fed by cup for a feeding or 2 or 3
this baby may become more willing to suckle on the breast. However, if this
is carried on too long a suck-deprived baby may refuse to suck on anything.
I have heard of this happening after 3 days of exclusive cup feeding in a
young infant (not sure of age).

The Haberman is wonderful tool, sometimes. At other times it is just
another super stimulus in the baby's mouth.

Personally, I have had very little luck using nipple shields. This may be
related to the fact that I see mostly 1 - 4 day old infants or to the fact
that so many of the inverted nipples that get me desperate also involve
thick, meaty areolas. I still try when the occasion seems appropriate.

Carla
