What do you do when your client, who's been working so diligently to
protect/build her milk supply while struggling with her infant's suck problems, goes
in for a well baby check and to ask for a ENT referral for frenotomy and the
Dr. tells her that "Nobody works this hard at breastfeeding...why don't you
just give up?">>

Couple of things to mull over:

Option 1: Knee -jerk: Tell your client "Nobody works this hard at being a
baby's doctor who is not knowledgeable about and supportive of Bf, and may
therefore be clueless and unsupportive about other important baby issues, ...why
don't you just give up and find a decent doc?"

Option 2: wait till you are calm and convey the above opinion in a really
professional and objective way, ....and, so she gets a clear message that you
do care and are there for her, get eye level with mom, leaning in slightly
with the whole body language thing going on: "How did you feel about this
advice?, ....yes, ((HUG if appropriate)) what was your response to the doctor?,
...were you satisfied with the doctor's care?....what do think are some options
for you are?, .......blah blah blah, more professional and objective type
chit chat that leads her to asking you if she should find a new doctor, ..."ah,
very good idea, I 'm glad you thought of that, many new parents have found
that to be a good strategy for reaching their goals in the best interest of
their baby", .....then promptly give your client a list of Bf friendly and
knowledgeable pediatricians/HCPs, .....if she is stuck in an HMO type situation
encourage her to interview all the available HCPs for a baby doc that fit her
needs.

Continue your kind and empathetic support that this mother needs so much.
