The last two posts I read in regard to the orphanage in Baku and the
American mother who had her babies taken away reminded me of a post I
had intended to make on Lactnet(didn't because of tech problems with my
ancient computer). In a previous post I spoke about ethical questions
and I think Kathy D. assumed I was questioning her ethics. What I meant
was that her suggestion was an ethical question which has broad
implications. The suggestion of "acceptable" infant deaths in order to
become a breastfeeding society is a morale/ethical dilemma. While this
seems like just a theoretical debate, I believe that it effects how each
LC perceives her/his(some males I believe) mission, how clients are
perceived, and how programs will be instituted. After reading about the
orphanage in Baku, we have to realize this is not a theoretical debate.
It is reality in all its complexity with issues of "dammed if you do and
dammed if you don't." Talking about statistic possibilities is one
thing, looking into the eyes and knowing the names of those hypothetical
babies is another. Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
