I spoke with one of the LD nurses at our Breastfeeding
Committee and she agreed it just isn't practical<<
I can't imagine working at a hospital where they would REFUSE to *allow* a
parent to keep his child with him especially, lets be honest here, when said
parent is an OB IN the hospital (except, of course, in case of an emergency).
They will ALL put up obstacles, yes but... ACTIVELY REFUSE? I can' t see it
happening in the big NE hospitals where I've worked. I also can't imagine that
there hasn't been ONE parent to push this. What if the parent were to
officially D/C the baby shortly after delivery, would the hospital kick the baby out
or would they allow him to room in?
If given no other choice, I would advise this father to accompany the baby to
the nursery, stand by the warmer while the baby is being bathed, examined etc
and then insist that he return the baby to the mom for STS warming (vs. iso
or warmer bed). I've had many parents do this. He could do the f/u VS checks
himself assuming that the RR nurses couldn't take the few minutes necessary! Why
people would opt for this factory approach to childbirth -I have NO idea!!
