An anesthesiologist doesn't need to give Versed to give a great anesthetic.
I've been skipping it a lot lately because I find my patients feel much
more clear upon emergence and in the recovery room. We have
anesthesiologists at my hospital who do not give it to patients who are
going home the same day of surgery because it may actually delay their
discharge home -- which could also theoretically delay initiation of
breastfeeding in the recovery room if moms are still drowsy.

If patients are very anxious in pre-op, bits of fentanyl titrated in makes
people feel pretty good on the way to the operating room. :)

Maybe suggest to this anesthesiologist that he just skip the Versed, or
offer his patients the chance to decline it? If he's talking about "dead
babies" he might not be swayed by literature that did not originate from his
field. Or, if you know of a particular anesthesiologist who's "good" with
breastfeeding moms (or just good in general) maybe see if there is a way you
could have moms request him or her a few days in advance.

If I had a breastfeeding mom, I'd skip the Versed, just so she wakes up more
quickly.
