I agree with Heather and Lara's posts about the need to look at the whole
picture and get to the best solution for each mother /baby unit. Sometimes,
full breatfeeding is not going to work. The reasons are long and complex.
For those of us who work seeing mothers in their home PP, we see babyies not
latching or mothers with little or no milk. ( and I do mean no milk).
Helping each mother find what will work for her to get her baby fed is a
challenge. This needs to be a very individualized approach. What works for
one may not be right for another. Pumping, bottles, fomula or combinations
are often needed. This is very challenging. We need to be creative,
thoughtful, supportive, and extremly sensitive. I find that I do a LOT of
emotional support and validation of motherhood in my practice. Sometimes a
mother needs to hear from a "breastfeeding person" that she is doing right
by her baby even though she needs to use formula or is pumping breastmilk
for her baby. One thing I say to mothers is that we never use the word only
in front of breastmilk. ie "I only have so many ounces of breastmilk" etc. I
am always amazed at just how hard these mothers will work to get breastmilk
into their babies. Ann Anderson NJ
