Please take note that copyright law varies from country to country.
The discussion so far may be correct for US law but it does not apply in
Canada.
If I wish to use an article in a college class I must get copyright
permission. There is a central organization (CanCopy) that contracts with
most but not all publishers and which expedites this. The articles are then
stamped...For personal use only. May not be photocopied. Some colleges and
universities have been hit with major (think 5 figures and up) fines over
not complying. Universities now pay a small amount per photocopy made at the
student use machines in libraries etc and it is distributed to authors. How
it is determined who gets what I have NO idea). With a bit of lead time it
is simple to get CanCopy OK and it does not usually cost much.
I have been at several conferences where the authors of articles
have been able to give us references but not copies as the copyright is now
with the journal.
Canadians can phone the federal copyright office if they need help
either in gaining copyright of their own work or learning about the law. I
have found the office friendly and very helpful.
