I'm hoping the wise voices of lactnet might be able to offer some
suggestions/answers to a call I received this evening. Mom called for
help for her 3.5 mo infant. Has been breastfed since birth.
Hx of "oversupply" according to mom. Has frequent, green frothy stools
(8X/day). Mom keeps her supply in check by offering one breast at a time
and for a period of 3-4 hrs sticks with that one breast. Within thelast
week baby's symptoms have gotten much worse. She consulted her MD who
said it sounded like lactose intolerance and told mom to use Lactofree
formula and / or putting lactaid in her breastmilk. Mom reluctantly has
been doing both of these suggestions but has seen little improvement,
some but little. Other history is baby is on phenobarbital since birth
due to seizures. Dosage was upped about 1month ago. Baby has been
growing fine (85% on charts). When I asked her what is different about
the symptoms recently that made her call for help she replied she is no
longer able to tolerate seeing the baby in so much "pain". She brings
her legs up even in her sleep and cries in pain.
I asked if the baby had a complete physical and she said she had been the
prior week for her regular check up. Nothing unusual was noted. Prior
to calling me, mom eliminated dairy from her diet for 14 days and saw no
real improvement. Any ideas where to go from here? Do you think it is
truely lactose intolerance?
