***despite the fact that there is a state religion and unfettered access to
teach religion to children via state schools, religious sensibilites play
little part in overall cultural behaviour -- sure loads of people belong to
all sorts of religions and it affects their individual behaviour. But this
is kept to a private realm and it would be considered fairly bad form to
talk about religion outside the church. From what I can gather, after over
20 years here, anglicanism seems to have little impact on the way people
actually
think or act, whereas for UK muslims ***

I agree totally for France : in 15 years, never heard one single "french"
mother who have ever mentioned their religion as being important for their
breastfeeding ; I have heard at most 2 or 3 muslim mothers mentionning
religion, but it was not the major reason for breastfeeding.

In France, there is no religion in state schools, only in some private
schools. Some state schools can have an chaplain, for religious instructions
(only for who want it, it is totally optionnal). It was the case in my
school. But I am 50 old now, and seems to me that very very few state
schools have still a chaplain.
