I was just reading Laurie Wheelerīs post about what a slow road it is to
see an increase in bf initiation rates in hospitals. I was especially
impacted thinking about the moms that may not be interested in the prenatal
class portions that involve breastfeeding. I was also thinking about how
many moms simply donīt know to offer the baby the breast right after the
birth, even if they may plan to breastfeed

Two ideas came to mind for taking advantage of a photo opportunity with
newborns at the breast. Both ideas require a camera, the time/effort
involved for taking the picture, a place to display the photos, and I
suppose the money for the cost of it all.....but here goes the idea.....

First idea: Have a nice poster to display at the prenatal bf class of
various mother/baby dyads during their first hour (or day, or whatever) at
the breast. The poster could include their names and the babiesī birth
dates, and " 23 minutes of age." (or 3 mins of age, or whatever) It could
be titled "Thank you Mommy for everything!"

Second idea: Moms could be told "We will take a FIRST time at Mommyīs
breast picture for you, if you wish." (Or it could be called a "thank you
Mommy picture.") If the baby has a difficult time latching in the
beginning, it could just be seen with itīs cheek against the breast,
looking content. (This could also work for the moms that would feel guilty
if they didnīt get a "thank you Mommy picture.") One picture could be for
the mother to keep and another for the hospital display.

I think that seeing these very tender moments before the birth could be
more emotionally motivating to mothers to give breastfeeding a try AND give
the idea that bf immediately after birth is promoted by the hospital.

What do you all think?
