In our breastfeeding medicine practice I see over 12 dyads per week and have NOT seen an increase in newly diagnosed tongue ties. We have had a great many mothers come to us with concerns about this diagnosis, but on complete evaluation and exam find that many of them do NOT have tongue tie and are, in fact, having nursing difficulties related to other factors (very often, underweight babies, bad nursing technique, conflicting advice.....). Once these other factors are corrected, these dyads do very well without any invasive procedures to baby. Some babes just need a little time......
This is not to say that tongue tie does not exist. It's just that I believe it to be often over diagnosed.
