I am a Lactation Consultant with a private practice in New York City. I am
not one of the LCs in the article, although I know all of them. The LC who
is followed around had her remarks taken totally out of context; the slant
is obvious to any careful reader. The LC in question is well-respected by
her clients and by her colleagues and didn't deserve the treatment she got
from the author. The pictures are particularly ugly; cartoon images of women
"in your face", breasts hanging out, earnest harangues in the air. And the
LC in the article does not "exert subtle pressure" in her support groups;
mothers do not report feeling judged. Really!
Hopefully discriminating readers saw it for the biased attempt at "hip
motherhood" that it was.
My contention is that most publicity in parenting magazines does us no good.
A handful of good articles in years of horrific, one sided, exploitative
coverage.
