Lucy,

I recently worked with a mother of a 11 mo (19#) who was put on Doxycycline,
50 ml 2x day, for a 14 day round for treatment of a uterine infection and
told that she must pump and dump. She was also told that she would have to
wait an additional 5-10 days before the med. was entirely out of her system
and it was ok to nurse. Her physician scared her silly about the long term
effects. Unfortunately this mother called me on the 4th day after completing
her round of the drug. She was having trouble getting a let down while
pumping.

I called the Lactation Study Center and was told that it would be ok to BF
during those 14 days but breastfeeding would not be recommended if the med.
was taken for a more extended period of time. (I do not know if age of baby
is a factor.)

I would suggest that this mother's physician contact LSC in the event that
Doxycycline is the nextline of defense if the Augmentin is unsuccessful.
