Greetings,

I don’t have as many details from this mom as I’d like and I hate to come on
like the inquisition right now. But, as of Thursday, the baby was down to 8 lbs
and something, and still breastfeeding. Mom is adamant (and I agree 100%
based on what she told me) that the breastfeeding is not the issue. My
impression is that breastfeeding is going well and the baby is getting plenty of
milk. The slow initial gain doesn’t throw me either; I know that plenty of
normal, healthy babies do this. But the continued loss of weight despite good
breastfeeding and good supply is worrisome.
Mom pushed the drs to consider metabolic problems. At first they insisted
that the metabolic screening done in the hospital after birth would have picked
up anything she was concerned about. She insisted that these tests should
be done again. When they went back and actually checked the baby’s
newborn test results, it seems that one of them was abnormal but had not
been reported, or overlooked, or something! Don’t ask me to explain that one,
this is just what Mom is telling me. She now has an appointment to take the
baby to a metabolic specialist at the University Hospital on Monday.
I’ll speak to the mom next week and let you all know which metabolic problem
her baby has.
Thanks to all who responded with your wonderful insights, ideas and
information.
