I love Kathy's snappy answers!
For mothers in our group who may not be comfortable with the snappy comeback approach, we recommend the old HRE standby: "I see that my choice to nurse my baby makes you uncomfortable." I love this because it reminds the buddinsky that it is the mother's choice and right to feed her baby as she pleases, and it also reinforces that it is the buddinsky who has the problem, not the mom. This has been known to put even the most aggressive mother-in-law on the defensive : )
Another one we like is: "It works well for our family." Hard to argue with that. And "My doctor highly recommends continuing." (No need to reveal that the doctor to which you are referring is Dr. Sears, or Dr. Jay Gordon and not your own not-so-highly-evolved pediatrician ! )
