We have a family history of adverse reactions, so we can't do
vaccines.  One doc still pushed, and told me about the 26 babies he
had to hospitalize the last year for whooping cough.  I asked him how
many of those babies were exclusively or even partially breastfed.  He
turned red and admitted that the answer was ZERO.  I told him I knew
that not being able to handle vaxes put my kids at risk, so I chose to
mitigate that risk as best I could by exclusive and prolonged
breastfeeding.  He cheerfully admitted that bf provided immunity and
the good health to fight off infections to which there wasn't immunity
passed on.

I think that's pretty key--nursing may not pass on passive immunity to
everything, but it still means that kids have the chance to develop a
*normal* immune system that can mount resistance to whatever they are
exposed to.
