I recently received a call from a working mother of a six-month old baby who
was experiencing sudden, unexplained hyperlactation only in her left breast.
She indicated that there was no change in nursing frequency, duration or
style (baby doesn't twiddle the opposite nipple), no change in bra or
nightgown that might stimulate nerve pathways, no skin condition which might
cause her to scratch the area, no change in pumping routine, no illness or
medication usage. It lasted approximately 48 hours and resolved by using
engorgement relief techniques of warm moist heat, massage, frequent nursing,
cool compresses and pumping for comfort. Does anyone have any idea what
might have caused this episode? I'm stumped!
