can anyone - tom hale? - shed some light on the issue of liver enzyme
elevation and clotrimazole? i am working with a mom who is treating
herself with Lotrimin and her baby was treated with gentian violet for a
week, and nystatin overlapping. i shared the info on Clotrimazole with her
from MMM '99, and she had some concern about the safety to her 16 month
old, getting it orally from her nipples. in one part of the entry, it
states that it is orally no very bioavailable, but in another part, it says
that it also comes in lozenges, and the safety of those is unknown for
children under 3, and it also mentions possibly elevated liver enzymes. i
found tom hale's post in the archives stating that he is not comfortable
using clotrmazole orally, due to the possibility of elevated liver enzymes.
but what about on the mom's nipples? applied after feeds, how much is the
baby likely to ingest, and would this be cause for concern? is lotrimin
not recommended and Miconozole or some other OTC safer/preferred in the
absence of GV or Nystatin? there seems to obe a lot of mixed info out
there with regards to this issue . . .thanks.
