Though I've only read snips of the discussion on taking babies along on
professional appointments, I thought I'd offer my thoughts.

My baby is 8 months old now, and I am a freelance writer. I write mostly
for a local daily paper, and I usually submit three or four articles a week.

James goes to most of my interviews and photo sessions with me. I don't
have trouble concentrating or conducting a good interveiw with him along.

I like to think that I am advancing the idea that children can be merged
into society and that a woman doens't have to be a mom OR a professional OR
a professional who puts baby in daycare.

But it is hard to do. I am not treated like as much as a professional when
I have him along - and though occasionally he is my ticket to disarming my
subject and making for a better interview, more often I feel less respected,
and that the subject doubts that I can be competent.

Hopefully when they see my work in print they will be convinced. But on an
immediate basis it is hard.
