Dear Lactnetters,
Just got a call from a mom who is still BF her 4 month old child and
5 days ago was diagnosed with Bullous Pemphigus - the dermatologist she saw
put her on Prednisone 50mg / day and told her to stop BF. She started
pumping and dumping, and now 5 days later is wondering if that was really
necessary. I gave her a copy of Tom Hale's information which indicates that
Prednisone in low doses is approved by the AAP for use in BF mothers. I was
just wondering if any of you worked with a pt. with this diagnosis. This
mom was enjoying her BF experience so much and is now thinking of trying to
build up her milk supply again - the baby adapted very well to the bottles
but the mom has not - she is just so discouraged at this diagnosis, plus
just feels pain miserable. It does seem that the disease is responding to
the treatment and the Dr. is hoping to have her completely off the
prednisone within about 2 weeks, but at the initial visit he gave her the
worst case senario and that looked like such a long term deal that she
didn't think she could pump for that long before getting back to BF. Any
information will be appreciated (I do plan to check Dr. Lawrence's book
later today.) Evelyn/Margie
