Karen,
Our hospital births about 1300 babies per year. When we have a baby who remains for antibiotic therapy and mother is discharged, we offer her a room as a guest. We provide meals for her, and a breast pump if she requires pumping. She can leave for short periods, but the expectation is that if we are providing the room she is going to be doing infant care and feeding her baby most of the time if baby's condition permits. She must obtain her own medications. When we offer the room we do discuss the possibility of our unit filling up and needing the room for a labor patient. If that happens we do what we can to get her a room outside of our unit to stay in and come back to the nursery to see the baby. At that point the mother often opts to go home and come back to visit baby. Our patients have appreciated our efforts to keep mother and baby together, even if the situation isnt perfect.

I am planning a curriculum for independent breastfeeding
classes I plan to teach. One of my major focuses will be
avoiding the pitfalls of early breastfeeding, including
separation of mothers and babies. I know that the one
hospital I have experience with has babies stay past the
mothers discharge when they need antibiotic therapy and
although mothers are allowed to spend time in the newborn
nursery breastfeeding when they choose they are not
usually able to have a bed, etc. I was wondering what
options are offered to families at other hospitals and
what parents can talk to their peds. about to keep mom
and baby together.
