We have a mother with antiphospholipid antibody syndrome who delivered her second infant by
emergency C-section at 36 weeks due to placental insufficiency. She breastfed her first child,
now 2 years old, for 8 months
with no problems. The mother and neonatologist have asked me if there is any chance that the
antiphospholipid antibodies can be passed via breastmilk and whether this would be of any
concern. I have been unable to find very much about this condition (on short notice) and have
found nothing in the lactnet archives. I suspect there is no problem (along the same lines as
ITP) but thought I might ask if anyone has had any experience with this condition and any
comments on the passage of these antibodies into breastmilk. By the way mother and baby are
breastfeeding beautifully!!
