Leocea, one of my fully breastfed babies acted the same way in the car; the
only way we could go anywhere was to HOLD the pacifier in his mouth until he
settled in the car (luckily for me, since would not hold it himself, this was
26 years ago when we were still putting infant car seats in the middle of the
front bench seat of our gas-hog station wagons, so I could drive and hold it
for him; if I needed two hands on the wheel the pacifier would fall out and
he would scream until I could pick it up and hold it in for him! ) We did not
begin to use this until after 4 weeks, and he was nursing well.
I usually tell moms that the pacifier, while generally not needed by
breastfed babies, is occasionally a useful tool. I stress that it should not
be used until after the first few weeks have passed, and only if baby is
otherwise nursing well. I also discuss how easily the pacifier can go from
useful tool to plug, and encourage mom to use this tool judiciously if at
all.

"drought"!
