Yes, we hear about the rich using wet nurses, but I imagine in the day to 
day life of a village, eons ago, a not thriving baby would be taken on by 
another mom (or mothers), however nobody noticed or wrote about this, it was 
probably just everyday commonplace. Or at least that is what I imagine 
happened.  or hope happened???

PS: it's kind of sad today that there is a resurgence of wet nursing for pay 
because a mom thinks she has better/more important things to do.  (I'm not 
referring to a situation where mom is simply unable for very serious 
reasons.)
Sad to think of breast milk becoming "THE" infant "formula" to give .  I'm 
preaching to the choir of course, who all know there is more to 
breastfeeding than the milk.  :-) Pat in SNJ
