This is just difficult when you know the information, the mother wants to
provide the best for her baby and the health care team is constantly
undermining her. I worked with a mother with similar concerns. The only
difference was that the mother was ill and she wanted to continue to nurse her 2
year old and 1 month old. One HCP actually told her she was poisoning her baby
due to the medication she was given even though she had Hale's book at her
side to show she was not and the baby's pediatrician had signed off on the
use of this medication. The Infant Risk Center was called by the parents
several times, but no one in the hospital was interested in what they had to
say. One HCP said this and Hale's book was one man's "opinion"!
Another tactic was that it was just too hard on her to continue even
though the mother felt this was what kept her going and the hormones relaxed
her. The lack of respect for the mother's desires was appalling. Since the
mother was on a medical floor, lactation had to be called in frequently. They
always supported the mother but had no power to enact any change.
The only step that seemed to help was calling in a patient advocate. This
was done several times and each time, the HCPs would back off for awhile.
In two instances the physician was removed from caring for the mother.
Since we cannot change these non evidenced based practices in so many
institutions overnight, I would at least try the patient advocate and see if
that helps.
