I am sending this out Friday night, May 23rd and need to get some references by tomorrow afternoon. I just got a call from a mother of a four week old baby. Baby had been nursing well until 5 days ago. On the 20th was admitted to Pediatric ICU for breathing difficulties- in severe distress. The diagnosis is some type of virus. She is extremely ill, has had some organ shutdown and heart problems, and was given a less than 10% chance to live. Now she has gotten somewhat better, but her kidneys are barely functioning. She may be having peritoneal dialysis tomorrow.
The mother of this baby is adamant that she receive breast milk. The MD says tomorrow he will start the baby on predigested formula for 24 hours and if she does all right, she can start getting breast milk. Mom wants her baby to get only breast milk and has told MD this, but he is insisting on the predigested formula. She has asked me if I can fax her some articles about the digestibility of breast milk by tomorrow. She believes that breast milk is just as easy to digest, and would like the baby to not have the formula. MD says the gut can tolerate predigested formula better. If anyone gets this tonight or tomorrow morning, I would appreciate it if you would respond so I can send her information for her physician.
Thank you.
Ann Calandro, RNC, IBCLC
