Along with the tear-jerking topic, smile at the end of the Legal report.. I
saw a 4 month old today who had never had a Lactation assessment in spite
of these ongoing problems:(AND I live 7 miles away, the resources are
available, just not communicated,or not deemed important or useful???)
Baby lost 1 pound within 3 days after scheduled C-birth
Baby lost an additional 1 pound before 1 month of age. The hospital
where mom birthed at has a "Breastfeeding Center" and yet mom was unaware
that it existed, and was not referred to it by baby's HCP.
Remedy: Feed the baby X amount "I don't care how you do it,just do
it...."

Mom had BF first babe to 2 years without a gliche( in spite of 40 hours of
pitocin,c/s,pain meds and early return to work, daycare and it was a boy AND
her first child, plus one truly inverted nipple-----red flags for
potential lactation problems

Mom never started out as a "We're going to do the family bed thing..." She
just found it worked best for her IN spite of frowns and lack of spouse
support/relative comments....Mom did not find it necessary to join or
attend any LLL or mom's support groups.(Too bad)

Now,baby #2 today has been a very sleepy baby from day one (Baby #1 "Never
slept and at age 4 is just now sleeping 6+ hours at noc) Mom had
cracked, bleeding nipples from day 4 and on until she couldn't stand it and
baby lost too much weight....
At which point rented a pump from the hospital which has a BF CENTER...to
provide the milk to baby via bottle.

Baby has been receiving bottles for 3.5 months now,and occasionally nurses
twice at night. No nipple trauma now.Mom called me thanks to a referral from
LLL--mom decided to call for help because her supply was so low that baby
needed formula.

Besides suck and latch problems, the milk supply problem could have been
avoided>>>Mom has been single pumping(Lactina) only 2-3 times/day because
she could "get twice as much milk single sided-pumping and in half the time
as double pumping".With that,I checked and sure enough: the blue silicone
ring was ON the white cylinder for single pumping (not recommended for
single)

Customer service couldn't help me on my concern, but I wonder just how much
extra suction improper single sided pumping generates.
Does anyone use a gauge? I'm going to ask my area rep if he can find this
out for me. No tissue trauma or pain reported from this mom. I recommended
mom switch to the Classic(double pumping) to help step up milk
production....plus the usual Q 2 hr.stuff.

Why she hung on this long ??? A positive locus of control and self-esteem
plus the successful example of her own mom who nursed 9 out of 10
etc.,etc. I will try to find out who did or didnot set up her pump for
her as she apparently didn't read the directions.

Denise Ferrell,IBCLC Indiana Calgon bath would be nice, and I
did recommend it to this mom (minus Calgon, plus baby)
