Our dieticians really like to use breastmilk for kidney patients and one of
the reasons is a lower solute load plus all the wonderful reasons that we
all know about breastmilk. They encourage breastfeeding.

I really think that this is a wonderful situation for the use of test
weights and observation of vital signs while the baby is feeding. Since we
only know that this baby has "kidney problems" it is difficult to comment
about this situation when the baby's condition is unknown. Babies that are
in kidney failure may lose their appetite and are difficult to feed by any
method. It is a struggle for them to gain weight.

I would also like to mention the literture about inants with congenital
heart disease and breastfeeding. Google those topics. One of the authors
(Marinelli ?) of 2 articles documents the stable vital signs and good oxygen
saturations in these babies during breastfeeding. As I remember these are
full term babies. Some heart babies are good breastfeeders and if they can
breastfeed without being stressed then surely a kidney patient can too.
Sincerely, Rachel Wahl RN IBCLC
