I think it is wonderful that you are going to be doing this presentation!

You might want to talk about research. There are several studies that suggest that breastfeeding is linked with lower rates of child abuse in high-risk populations. While this isn't cause and effect, it's another reason to support breastfeeding. There is interesting research about how the brains of breastfeeding mothers respond differently when they hear their babies crying than the brains of mothers who are not breastfeeding (as shown on MRIs) respond when their babies cry, and this may be why the risk of abuse is lower. Other research shows that mothers who have breastfed are less controlling about food with their toddlers (a common problem with high-risk parents).

One thing I find is that many child welfare workers don't have children (yet) and have no experience with normal breastfed baby behaviours. The ones I worked with (I have worked in child welfare for many years) would often express concerns that the baby was being fed "too often" or that something was wrong because the baby woke up to feed in the night several times. So it might be useful to discuss normal feeding patterns and normal baby behaviours.

Subject: Request - Topics for Child Welfare Staff

I have been given the opportunity to speak to Child Welfare staff about ways to support breastfeeding under the very stressful situations they work.

Yes, I am aware there are some terrible Child Welfare people that everyone fears because they remove babies from the home.  On the other hand, I myself have had to report the dangerous situations observed and have been grateful for their intervention.

I only have 30 minutes.

I was wondering if any of you have given/prepared this sort of presentation, so I don't start from scratch...or if you have recommendations or suggestions besides the ones I have thought of:
1. The risk of not breastfeeding - to baby, to mother and to their relationship
2. The value of breast milk feeding when breastfeeding is not possible
3. Sources of accurate information to provide to mothers suspected of drug use and how to communicate this to them
4. Community resources of pumps, breastfeeding information and support.

I'm not expecting to convert them to breastfeeding proponents - but if they can see that helping mother continue to breastfeed may help in their goals - safety for the child and family preservation, maintenance and reunification - we may be able to work with them to avoid unnecessary permanent cessation of breastfeeding.

Thanks - the talk is on Tuesday!

Hello,
I have worked as a bra fitter myself and since I have a very odd size
in a bra (42B)  I had looked at many nursing options for myself. The
best one by far was finding a bra that fit me well size-wise and then
convert (or have it converted) into a nursing bra.
This conversion can be done with any type bra, a friend, who is
abundant had her "Goddess" bras converted. The little plastic clips
are very inexpensive and the whole prosses takes about 15 minutes.
All the best.

Dear Friends,

Maria Parlapiano, RN, IBCLC, has started a petition to stop Nestle from providing $100,000.00 and educational support (including breastfeeding information) to all 15 of the city's Family Success Centers in Newark (the largest city in New Jersey, USA).

This is an easy action - you just need to sign your name (but you can leave a comment if you wish).  We need as many of the 3,000 people on lactnet, (in the US and around the world), as possible, to respond, quickly.  Nestle is planning to expand this program to other US cities.  STOP Nestle.

Maria has written an excellent petition giving you lots of information but if you need more please contact me.

A few of you have  already responded and for your support, Maria and I say thank you but to date, most of the signatures have come from Maria's and my (Vancouver, Canada) personal networks.

Our children are everyone's issue.  Please sign the petition, (link below) and forward link to your family and friends. Together we CAN stop Nestle.

My very first talk ever was given to child welfare workers in training.
Your list sounds awesome, Jeanette. I also covered  the differences
between normal breastfeeding dynamics, medical problems that cause
failure to thrive, and child neglect.
