After attending a LLL Conference back in 2001 we were impressed with the NICU breastfeeding program of a hospital in Chicago, IL. Im sorry, I dont remembre the hospital's name, but Im sure someone else does.

We started a similar program locally with a small grant from March of Dimes (2002-2004).

First we instructed the NICU personnel (nurses, MD's).

The grant allowed us to provide the NICU some breastpumps for those mothers who couldnt afford them.

The program also included a weekly support group, were we discussed from pumping, cleaning, transporting bm, NICU procedures, etc.

We also made a phamplet (in Spanish) with the most frequent questions mothers ask.

To us, Dr. Jane Morton's video was extremely valuable to teach, not only the mothers, but the NICU personnel.

The program was so successful (to a certain limit,,,since sometimes we didnt have the cooperation of the nurses...but that's another story)...we visited the other 43 NICU units around the Island encouraging then to open similar programs.

I left the hospital 10 months ago, so Im not sure if they kept the program running (probably not).
