I don't have stats, though they may exist somewhere, but Peter
Fleming (doyen of SIDS research internationally) has gone on record
warning that the stark messsage 'do not bed share' leads to *more*
infant deaths because tired mothers sit up with their babies on a
sofa instead - and the baby is smothered. I think you can find him
saying this in the BMJ.

'Do Not Bed Share' is a horrible message. I dislike it intensely. It
causes huge distress in babies and makes mothers terrified - they are
worried their babies will die, and they are worried they will start
'bad habits' in their baby. It also causes mothers and babies to miss
out on a sweet, loving experience that (I think) has benefits for a
lifetime.
