 Hello, Jessica.
This mom's case is a bit different due to the previous breast surgery and the subsequent discharge. So I would be most comfortable suggesting she see her doctor. But do reassure her that, although the vast majority of breast infections occur in lactating women, it is possible for *any* person to have one. It occurs in teens, grandmas, even men. My kids are 25 and 23-this-Saturday, long since weaned, and the only breast infection I ever had occurred approximately 2 years ago! (Fortunately, since I work with so many breastfeeding mothers, I knew what it was and didn't panic. Mine was not as severe as your friend's and went away without treatment.)
