I am a daily lurker on lactnet and a new (2006) IBCLC but have only posted 
once.  So here is my second post!

In response to questions about the paraguard IUD and its effect on 
breastfeeding- the paraguard IUD does not contain any hormones and 
therefore will not interfere with breastfeeding. There is no contraindication to 
getting an IUD just because a woman is breastfeeding (though 
contraindications do exist for this method as with any birth control method and 
should be discussed with her HCP).  Some HCPs prefer to insert the IUD at >12 
weeks postpartum to allow the uterus to firm up after pregnancy and delivery 
thus minimizing the risk of perforation though I have seen women get them as 
early as their 6 week postpartum check-ups.

The Mirena IUD releases a small, localized dose of levonogestrel (progesterone)
directly into the uterus. A small amount can enter the blood stream but there 
is less chance of side effects due to the targeted delivery of hormone to the 
uterus.  Again, this method is compatible with breastfeeding.  

And it is worth mentioning that both IUDs (paraguard and mirena) are highly 
effective in preventing pregnancy.
