I hope my story will give you hope that you can work as an IBCLC and not
be an RN. We have a lucrative private practice and contract with a
local hospital to provide all of their lactation services and daily
rounds. We have 2 RN's and 5 non- RN's who work with us and do rounds,
classes and support groups. It took a bit of convincing for the
management to understand what an IBCLC was.. She responded positively
and understood that you did not need to have an RN to do our job. We do
get referrals for local MD's. I have to say we have been in practice for
almost 15 years so building a reputation was key to gaining the MD's
trust. The one thing I will ass is that I do like all of the IBCLC's
who work with us to have a very strong science background, with college
level courses (not 6 hours)in Anatomy, Physiology and nutrition and
child development. They also have experience at the peer counseling
level and do a internship with us for 3 to 9 months before they are let
loose. This includes helping with support group, telephone follow-up,
question lines and shadowing on during rounds and homevisits.

Best of Luck!!!
