I think that this mom needs much more psychiatric support. Her
statement about taking the baby off the vent is quite frightening. She
probably should be on the meds she was on prior to pregnancy. I have worked
with quite a few NICU moms and know how breastfeeding and the pumping of
breastmilk is often the only way they see themselves as doing something for
their baby. I have also had many moms extremely focused on their milk
supply. However, I have NEVER heard a mom speak the way you have
described. Certainly, they are frustrated and upset if the milk supply
doesn't meet the needs of the baby, but the moms continue to work at it as
they adjust to the birth of such a tiny baby. I would immediately speak
with her psyciatric support team.
