Yesterday had an occasion to supplement a baby who would NOT latch to
mother without a shield and still below birthweight at 3 weeks. (Baby
has mid-tongue bunching, bubble palate, no tongue-tie, no real suck
until finger advanced past mid-tongue then a very tight bite.) We had
sterilized the breastflow bottle, a dr. brown's and a special needs
feeder. ON the breastflow - baby could get nothing. ON the dr. brown's
side-lying on right side, some suction, better on left side but seemed
to be biting more than sucking with a very fast flow even on the side.
WE switched to a Haberman for control of the flow for mom. This is what
we will use for a while mother builds supply on the left side which is
quite depressed. Baby will latch with 24 mm shield, not with 20 mm.
Just thought I'd share my experiments with you. By the way, look at the
ultrasounds live. Suction may be the primary cause of milk removal but
compression and contact is also involved. Breasts are different from
bottle nipples and pumps are different from baby's mouths!
