That was really hard for me to read.

I think what happens so
often in discussions concerning ff and breastfeeding is that the
discussion gets derailed by stories of how hard it is for some women to
breastfeed. The discussion degrades into how we breastfeeding advocates
vilify formula feeding. There is little understanding of how dangerous
formula feeding can be, especially in an emergency, non-sanitary
situation.

I don't understand how formula feeding can be seen as an
easier, less stress option in an emergency when you have no access to
fuel, water, or supplies. It just doesn't compute for me.

I know that
it all comes down to the basics which we are all fighting for. For
breastfeeding to become the normal start to every baby's life. For
birthing/hospital practices to change so they don't sabotage
breastfeeding before it even gets started, for every woman to have
access to competent lactation help to assist mothers who need extra
support navigating early issues (tongue ties, prematurity etc.), and for
a medical establishment who is educated and willing to support
breastfeeding at every turn (willing to cut tongue ties, knowledge about
medications and breastfeeding etc.).

All countries need such a huge
overhaul in how all of these issues are handled it really does seem
daunting and impossible. I have to keep in mind that while I can't
change the big picture, for each individual woman I help, I have made a
world of difference to her and her baby.

Thank you to Karleen and
others who are fighting to make the big changes. I truly admire your
work.
