In response to the question of getting babies to breast after c-sections.
When I had my last son, 19and 1/2 years ago they took him to recovery and
when I got there I was able to nurse him (only cause he was crying and the RR
nurse didn't want to hear him). The hospital where I currently work has never
encouraged babies nursing in RR. I work 12 hour nights and try to get the
baby over to at least see mom when I work in the nursery, we also attend the
deliveries. Sometimes I have to prod dad to push the RR nurse to be "allowed"
to see the baby instead of waiting till mom comes out to her room over an
hour later.
During the day it is about impossible to get the babies over there as there
is also gyn surgical patients in the RR and the nurses, who are not labor and
delivery nurses, don't want to disturb these patients! It has been the bain
of my existance for all the years I've worked there (second only to the blood
glucose protocol).
It's very difficult on our unit to get the nurses to give up the babies
until they are bathed and rewarmed, very frustrating situation. Needless to
say I can guarantee we will never be designated a baby friendly hospital,
especially the way our manager cozies up to the formula reps "because we get
more free stuff that way". YIKES!!!
